Important Notes

7-Day Machame Route Itinerary Description

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Elevation: 5,400 ft to 9,400 ft
Distance: 11 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest

The drive from Moshi to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes about 50 minutes, passing through Machame village on the lower slopes of the mountain. After registration, the trek begins through dense rainforest on a winding trail along a ridge. The path can be muddy and slippery, making trekking poles and gaiters useful. We continue until reaching Machame Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Elevation: 9,400 ft to 12,500 ft
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland

After breakfast, we leave the rainforest and follow an ascending path crossing a small valley. The trail climbs a steep rocky ridge covered with heather before turning west into a river gorge. The day ends at Shira Camp where we rest, dine, and overnight.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 12,500 ft to 13,000 ft
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Semi-Desert

From the Shira Plateau, we trek east along a ridge towards Kibo, then turn southeast to the Lava Tower, known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” After reaching higher altitude, we descend to Barranco Camp at 13,000 ft. Although the elevation gain is minimal, this day is critical for acclimatization and greatly improves summit success.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 13,000 ft to 13,100 ft
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

After breakfast, we climb the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling but non-technical scramble. The trail continues through ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp. This is a shorter day designed specifically for acclimatization.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 13,100 ft to 15,300 ft
Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

We leave Karanga Camp and join the Mweka Trail, ascending steadily to Barafu Camp. This completes the Southern Circuit, offering stunning views of the summit from multiple angles. After settling in, we rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit attempt. Both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks are visible from camp.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 15,300 ft to 19,345 ft, down to 10,000 ft
Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent
Hiking Time: 7–8 hours ascent / 4–6 hours descent
Habitat: Arctic

Around midnight, we begin the summit push between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, ascending through loose scree toward Stella Point. This is the most challenging section of the trek. At Stella Point (18,600 ft), we rest briefly before continuing to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, we descend to Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Moshi

Elevation: 10,000 ft to 5,400 ft
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest

After breakfast, we descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate where summit certificates are issued. The trail can be wet and muddy at lower elevations. From Mweka Village, a vehicle transfers you back to your hotel in Moshi.
